Clovis Vernon (Snuffy) Smith

October 26, 1929 — November 12, 2011

Clovis Vernon Smith, 82, of Ballinger went to be with the Lord Saturday morning, November 12, 2011 surrounded by his family.

He was born on October 26, 1929 in Coleman County to Joseph Edward and Alta E. (James) Smith. He attended schools in Norton and Crews. He farmed in the Crews Community before moving to the Ballinger area where he worked in the oil field industry, followed by the City of Ballinger and later for Irby Oil Company.

On February 27, 1953 he married Emma Lou Cowlishaw. He and Emma were long-time, faithful members of Seventh Street Baptist Church.

He is survived by Emma, his wife of over fifty eight years; their four children, Debbie Watts and husband, Alan, Larry Smith and wife, Sharon, all of Ballinger, Cynthia Preas and husband, Lyndon, of San Angelo and Ed Smith and wife, Lara, of Richland Springs. His beloved grandchildren, Jeremy Watts, Amanda Preas, Marshall Preas, Krystal Smith, and Emily Smith also survive. Additionally, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews who are dear to his heart and special family members, Fred Smith of California, Jimmy and Betty Cowlishaw of McKinney, Ruby and Charles Wearden of Ballinger, Martha and Charles Carter of Arlington, and Judy and Fred Lippe of Ballinger.

Clovis never met a stranger, always had a smile, and was ready for a conversation. A person had to work very hard not to be a friend, and he leaves behind many special ones, including Allen Cole and Jimmy Templeton.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, November 13 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 14, 2011 at the Seventh Street Baptist Church with Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Runnels Cemetery.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Central Texas Nursing and Rehab for his care the past year and the friends he made during his stay. Thanks and gratitude to Dr. Bradly Bundrant and the staff of Ballinger Memorial Hospital and especially to Carolyn Parker who provided exceptional care and comfort to the family.

Memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018, or a favorite charity.
