Roy Don Payne, sometimes better known as “Spot” or “Poppie,” of Ballinger passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at his residence. He was 72.
He was born April 5, 1939 in Crowell, Texas to Roy Clifford and Glondon (Glover) Payne, both of whom preceded him in death. Don married Vickie Pleasants Witt on February 8, 1963 in Ballinger. He worked 53 years as a road construction superintendent, 37 of those years for Dahlstrom Corporation in Buda, Texas and then for Cherokee Bridge and Road in Junction. It was during those 53 years Don made friendships that lasted throughout his life.
Don was a hard worker, starting at the age of 18 in the road construction business. His work ethics far surpassed those of most men. He loved his work, always gave his best, and stayed on the job until the job was completed to his satisfaction.
Don was a man of few words. He listened, learned, and loved with his heart. He took great pride in his special haven—his back yard. He loved to garden, plant flowers, tend to the fish pond, and watch his two turtles that have lived in the back yard for 17 years. Don loved to go fishing and enjoyed the outdoors.
Preceding him in death was a brother, Michael Onton Payne.
Don is survived by his devoted wife of almost 49 years, Vickie, of Ballinger; daughter, Julia Duke and husband, Randy, of Red Oak; son, Michael Don Payne of Allen; and brother, Marian Payne of Quanah. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his beloved pet and best friend, Annabelle; a very special uncle, Son Glover of Crowell; and brother-in-law, Tommy Pleasants and wife, Judy, of Marlin.
Graveside services will be held Friday, January 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger with Bro. Bobby Broyles officiating.
