James "Jimmy" Harold Black

James Harold (Jimmy) Black, 78, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2012 at his home in Winters.

He was born on February 12, 1933, in Ballinger, Texas, to Ross M. Black, Sr. and Lola Allison Black.
Jimmy attended Ballinger schools and worked some for his dad at Ballinger Dry Goods while in high school. After graduating from school in 1952, he served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War until January 1955.

He worked for O’Dell Howard Well Service, George Ford Motors as a car salesman, and co-owner of Broadway Gulf Service Station. After selling the service station in 1956, he worked as a salesman and later manager of American Supply Company in Winters until November 1982. At that time he became a partner and manager of Winters Oilfield Supply Company, retiring in March 1998. Jimmy married Virginia Ann Gideon of Winters on March 11, 1956, and they have lived in Winters since that time. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winters. Jimmy will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, and he never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Douglas Black and Gerald Black of Ballinger; and two sisters-in-law, Vida Black of Ballinger and Joyce Black of San Angelo.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of the home; one son, Greg Black and wife, Kim, of Plano; and one daughter, Kay Schwartz and husband, Richard, of Winters. Also surviving are five grandchildren, James Black and Pamela Black of Plano, Alicia Gray, Ambar Smith and Zachary Schwartz of Winters; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Alyssa, Matthew and Kendra Gray of Buffalo Gap; two brothers, Ross M. Black, Jr. and Bobby Black and wife, Susie, all of Ballinger; two sisters-in-law, Kay Black of Ballinger and Betty Sanders of Weinert; a cousin, Lorene Allison of Ballinger, and several nieces. Also remembering Jimmy are his caregivers, Dora Yanez, Karen Lara, Elena Torres, Nora Tischler, Lupe Esquivel, Nancy Moore, and Marta Olivas, who he called “his little angel.”

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 17 at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 18 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Winters with Bro. Heath Powers and Bro. Barry Taylor officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Freddy Richards, Carrel McKnight, Billy Harold Wilson, Henry Wheeler, Donny Killough, and Carlos Yanez. Honorary pallbearers will be Bert Humble, Ray Laughon, and Jack Parr. Burial with military honors will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Winters.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, Alzheimer’s Association, or the First Baptist Church of Winters.
