Dub McMillon, 86, of Ballinger died early Saturday morning, March 3, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born May 22, 1925, in Guion, Texas, to James Luther and Tennie (Haynie) McMillon. He attended college at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene before serving with the US Navy during World War II. He married Lanora Jo Young on January 20, 1948, in Abilene. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2006.
Dub and Jo began their life together in Abilene where their children were born. Early in their marriage, Dub sold farm equipment. In the 1950s building boom era, he owned and operated Atlas Sand and Gravel. In 1959, he began an insurance career with Business Men’s Assurance. He later joined Farm Bureau Insurance where he served almost 20 years before retirement. While in Abilene, he and his family attended South Side Baptist church where Dub served as a deacon.
In 1972, Dub, Jo, and Mary moved to Ballinger where Dub was the agency manager for Runnels County Farm Bureau. He was a successful insurance agent and was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Membership is recognized internationally as the standard of excellence in the life insurance business. He retired after 16 years with Runnels County Farm Bureau so he could spend more time with the loves of his life, his family and farming/ranching. In Ballinger, the family attended First Baptist Church where Dub served as a deacon and as director of the adult Sunday School. He was active in the Runnels County 4-H, and in 1987 was named Citizen of the Year for his outstanding work with youth. He also served as president of the Runnels County Hospital District, president of the Bradshaw Reunion Association, president of the Ballinger Chamber of Commerce, and in several other civic endeavors.
Dub loved being with people. Whether he was playing “42”, traveling with the Young Farmers, relaxing in the Airstream at Horde’s Creek Lake, or in character as “Horace Hardin”, Dub loved being with friends and family. His true passion was farming and ranching. His heart never really left the family farm at Guion. He farmed and ranched in Taylor and Runnels counties. Today he is enjoying his big spread in Heaven where he’ll never have to mend fences.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary McMillon, and two sons, James McMillon and wife, Sarah, and Larry McMillon and wife, Suzanne, all of Abilene; four grandchildren, Shellie McMillon of Arlington, Alison McMillon of Dallas, Nick and Reyna McMillon of Abilene, and Kristi and Webb Murphy of Abilene. There will be a service of celebration at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Ballinger with Rev. Ferris Akins and Bro. Bobby Broyles officiating.
