Jerline Francis (Buxkemper) McCartney, 81, of Austin and formerly of Melvin passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012 in an Austin medical center.
She was born October 29, 1930 in Runnels County, Texas to Gerhard A. and Mary J. (Ocker) Buxkemper. She graduated from Ballinger High School. Jerline and Jim McCartney of Winters were married September 7, 1948 in Rowena at the Rectory of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
A family member described Jerline as a “retired domestic engineer,” but she had also worked as a sales clerk, children’s clothing shop owner, and bookkeeper/accountant for numerous companies over the years and finally for the family-owned electrical contracting and electrical wholesale companies in Wyoming. Jerline lived in nine different states and too many communities to list, “just trying to earn a living.” While in Wyoming, she was a president of the Green River Woman’s Club, an active volunteer in various local elections, and always involved in her local Catholic Church. Upon her return to Texas in 1976, she became a rancher’s wife for 30-years, and an avid genealogist and family historian who wrote and published in 1986 The McCartney Family of Texas, History and Genealogy of James McCartney, which covered seven generations from 1844 to 1986.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Isolda Halliburton; and brothers, Richard, Wilfred, Weldon, and James Buxkemper. Additionally, in 1996 Jerline’s and Jim’s first-born child, David J. McCartney, passed away.
Jerline is survived by her husband of 63.7 years, Jim McCartney of Austin; daughter, Debra McCartney of Austin; son, Gary Wayne McCartney and wife, Delores, of San Antonio; grandson, Shane McCartney and wife, Rebecca (Becca), of Tilden; two great-grandchildren, Michele and Colton McCartney. Also surviving is her brother, Jerome Buxkemper and wife, Harriet, of Austin; sister-in-law, Edleen Buxkemper of Rowena; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be recited by Deacon Stanley Lange on Friday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Lange Funeral Home Chapel in Ballinger. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena with Fr. Ariel Lagunilla officiating. Immediately following the Mass, burial will take place in Eden Cemetery, Eden, Texas.
