Lester Glass passed away January 01, 2013 at his home in Miles, TX. He was 80 years old.
Lester was born October 30, 1932 to Edward and Rose (Pohler) Glass in Miles, TX, where he lived most of his life. A TRUE farmer and rancher, Lester thrived on the excitement of a seed maturing in the field or a new lamb choosing a cold winter day to be born and…. always watching for more rain.
He was born in Miles, where he went to school, and participated in sports. His interest in sports followed him all his life, as a quarterback for Miles High School, and later as a supporter of MHS teams that followed. He also served on the Miles ISD Board.
In his twenties, he was “Rookie of The Year” and played baseball for the Miles Giants Semi-Pro Baseball Team.
In his early days, Lester helped to organize and was the first president of the Runnels County Swine Breeder Association, later known as the Tri-County Swine Breeder Association, served as Superintendent of the Swine Division for area Fat Stock Shows, was a charter member and past President of the Miles Young Farmer Association and was runner-up for the Area Outstanding Young Farmer Award.
A pioneer in the production of Yorkshire hogs from England resulted in Champion and Grand Champion breeders at Fort Worth and area Texas Fairs. In the 1960’s he began a Specific Pathogen Free Herd and sold breeding hogs across the US.
Throughout his career he saw the importance of diversification and found commodities that would enhance his operation, from wheat, milo, and cotton to triticale.
He raised Rambouillet, Suffolk and White Dorper Sheep. Alternative Livestock ventures lead Lester and Annetta to raising Exotic Birds, Emus and his White Labrador Retriever Dogs which were raised as therapy and companion animals. His everyday companions and always by his side were Max, Maggie, and Nicki.
Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Laura Halfmann.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Annetta Glass; sons, Kerry and Connie Glass, Steven and Trudy Glass of Miles; step-sons, Morris and Becky Hopkins of San Angelo, Stephen and Gloria Hopkins of League City; step-daughter, Sheila and Johnny Alley of Miles; grandchildren, Heather Hohensee, Shawn Glass, Nathan Glass, Amber Glass, Karla Glass, Justin Alley, Clayton Alley, Shelby Alley, John Hopkins, and Kaylee Hopkins; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Alice Book and Nadine Fischer.
