Sigurd B. "Si" Smith

Sigurd B. “Si” Smith, 74, of Ballinger, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, March 9, 2013, at Shannon Medical Center, surround by family, faith, love and prayer.


He was born May 24, 1938 in Stamford, TX to Allie Bailey and Leonie Pauline (Moritz) Smith. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam era with the US Air Force from 1960 to 1964 returning to marry his sweetheart, Julene Williams, on July 28, 1967 in Denton, TX. The couple moved to Ballinger in 1969.

Si worked for GTE for 24 years before retiring and becoming a groundskeeper for Ballinger ISD for 10 years. He was an active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ballinger and the Ballinger Country Club.

Si was preceded in death by his wife on January 1, 2008, his parents, and a daughter, Cindy Lou Smith.

Survivors include his daughters, Betty Sue Cowsert and husband, Gully, of San Angelo, and Belinda Castillo and husband, Robert, of Ballinger; grandchildren, Payton Williams, Joseph Castillo, and Bailey Cowsert. Two sisters, Lanette Browder and husband, Jim, of Whitney, and Iris Garza and husband, Nick, of Sonora; three cousins; nieces, nephews, and many friends also survive.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, March 11, 2013 at Lange Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday March 12th at the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger with Pastor Tom Baden of San Angelo officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.


The family requests that donations be made to the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department or a favorite charity.
