Obituary for Juanda Gene McClelland

Juanda Gene McClelland, formerly of Ballinger, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at a nursing center in Fairfield. She was 77.

Gene was born April 25, 1930 in Ballinger, Texas to James Albert and Edna Keeton Witt. She graduated from Ballinger High School in 1947 and then began a long career in legal, abstract, and mortgage loan servicing working for Runnels County Clerk’s office and attorney Drury Hathaway.

She married Glyn McClelland July 16, 1949 in Ballinger. They moved to Humble, Texas in 1967 where she soon found employment with Heights Savings Association. While there, she was honored by the Houston YWCA as Heights Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1986. They moved to Onalaska, Texas in 1992, and Glyn died in 1993. She moved to Fairfield in 2005 with a short stay in Palestine in 2007 at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living, then back to Fairfield in 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, James A. “Bert” Witt, Jr.

Gene is survived by her son Marvin G. “Mack” McClelland, Jr. and wife, Cathe, of Fairfield; grandson, Joe McClelland; granddaughters, Melissa Neumann and husband, Paul; Jennifer Phillips and husband, Donnie; Carrie Miller and husband, Casey; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas Neumann; Hana and Emma Phillips; Cale, Cathryn and Chase Miller. Also surviving are sisters, Nell Murphy of Midland, Catherine Bailey and husband, Jessie, of Ballinger, and sister-in-law, Bonnie Witt of Sweetwater. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends survive.

There will be a time of visitation for family and friends Friday, April 4th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Lange Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5th at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Ballinger with Rev. Ferris Akins officiating. Burial will follow in Old Runnels Cemetery.

Those who knew Gene will remember that she worked hard, strived to please, and was giving to those in need.
