Coleman Clifford Harwell

May 7, 1917 — June 4, 2008

Coleman C. Harwell, 91, of Ballinger, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 4, 2008 at Ballinger Memorial Hospital.

He was born on May 7, 1917 on the Mason/Llano County Line to Green Walker and Eleanor Eva (Chew) Harwell. He attended Brady Valley Schools and transferred to Eden High School to play football and other sports at which he excelled. He was awarded a four-year scholarship to San Marcos College but elected to stay home and farm and help take care of his parents. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, was released in 1944, and moved to Eden in 1946 where he met Blanche Cloonan at the restaurant she owned and operated. They married New Year’s Eve, 1948 (so everyone would celebrate their anniversary every year, according to Coleman). The couple moved to a ranch outside Ballinger where Coleman was ranch manager for Earl Barr. The Harwells were very active in the Bethel Methodist Church and after moving to Ballinger became members of the First United Methodist Church. Coleman became the manager of Wright Feed and Supply, retiring at age 65. He lived at his current home for 53 years where he lived a full and wonderful life. He was able to live by himself until just a short time before his death.

Mr. Harwell was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche, November 16, 2000; two sisters, Iveta Harwell and Juanita Balkum; and three stepsons, Robert Coslett, Jim Coslett, and Patrick Cloonan.

He is survived by his daughter, Colleen Pattee and husband, Hank, of Laurel, Maryland and by his sister, Novella Barfknecht of Eden. Also surviving are grandchildren, Chad Pattee, Shela Leavings, Shae Cloonan, Patrick Coslett, Kandi Harman, Rhonda Emerson, Michael Coslett, Teresa Burleson, and stepson, Dave Coslett.

There will be a time of visitation on Friday, June 6 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger. Graveside service for Coleman Harwell will be Saturday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the Miles Cemetery with Rev. Joe Chamness officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Pattee, Shae Cloonan, Tony Barfknecht, and Don Barfknecht.
