Lanham M. Carter

November 20, 1928 — October 10, 2014

Lanham Mac Carter, 85, loving husband, daddy, granddaddy, and great-granddaddy passed into the loving arms of his heavenly father, Friday, October 10, 2014.

Lanham Mac was born November 20, 1928 in Norton, Texas to Wade and Altha Carter. He attended Norton High School and after graduation joined the United States Air Force. On August 5, 1948 he married the love of his life Colleen Mosier and they started their life together in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was stationed until 1953. At that time they moved back to Norton for his love of farming. Unfortunately, that was interrupted due to the drought of the 50’s so he worked for the Western Company. During this period of time they welcomed the arrival, in 1953, of their first child, Cheryl Lynn. Four years later they were blessed with their second child Mark Wade and his return to farming and his love of the land. Mac was always a hard worker which along with farming included raising sheep and Black Angus cattle.

In his spare time Mac loved to trotline fish and always looked forward to hooking the big one. Visiting the Norton Gin and discussing the weather and the crops, drinking coffee and eating breakfast at the Friendly Corner aka Beefmaster, and in his later years eating at the Senior Citizens were also important to him.

He was a member of the Norton Lions Club and always looked forward to the pancake and chili suppers. He also enjoyed the yearly Norton Homecoming where he got to see old friends and catch up on each others lives.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he worshipped faithfully until recent health issues.

He was preceded in death by his parents and lifelong partner, Colleen.

Lanham is survived by his children Mark Carter and wife Diane and Cheryl Clayton and husband Manse all of Ballinger; his adoring grandchildren Alyson Harris and husband James of Georgetown, Kentucky and Tyler Carter of San Antonio; great-grandchildren Caleb Strube, Peyton Harris, and expected in April, Eli Carter Harris. He was also “granddaddy” to Eric Lugo, James Clayton, and Regina Zaruba. Other survivors include his brother, Nealon Carter and wife Sue; nieces Marcia King and husband Frank and Donna Bryant and husband Scott; and nephews Trey Mosier and wife Sherri and Steven Mosier. Numerous family and friends mourn his loss.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 15 at 2:00 pm at the First Methodist Church in Ballinger followed by a private family burial at Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ballinger Senior Citizens or a charity of your choice.
