James was born April 5, 1925 in Ballinger to Jesse Edwin and Lenora (Seipp) Fowler, into a large, loving family that ultimately consisted of nine children. In November of 1950 he married Eleanor “Ruth” Crimm, who preceded him in death January 29, 2004. James served his country proudly and honorably as a seaman in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his “retirement” he continued working for DBO Oil Company until the time of his death. He was very active in community affairs, especially in activities that honored his country, and contributed a great deal in various ways to his beloved hometown. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ballinger Masonic Lodge #643, VFW Post #8119, and Ballinger American Legion Post #8.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jesse Edward, Henry, and Ross Fowler; and sisters, Virginia Murphy and Louise Flanagan.

James is survived by his daughter, Katy Fowler of San Angelo; brothers, Bob Fowler and wife, Maureen, of Ballinger, David Fowler and wife, Donna, of San Angelo; sister, Mary Ann Hale and husband, Charlie, of Brownwood; and sister-in-law, Johnnie Fowler of San Angelo. Numerous nieces and nephews who were much loved also survive.

There will be a time of visitation for family and friends on Tuesday, November 4 at Lange Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (Note from James: “Vote before you come!”) Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ballinger. Rev. Kary Rawlings will officiate and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will follow in Old Runnels Cemetery.
