William Selby

February 15, 1919 — December 21, 2008

William “Bill” Selby, 89, of Ballinger passed away early Sunday morning, December 21, 2008 at Ballinger Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Bill was born on February 15, 1919 to William Lee and Bessie Shotwell Selby in Hill County, Texas. He served his country during WWII in the US Army, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1940 he married Helen Marie Duff, who preceded him in death in 1997. He lived in Ballinger since 1946 and owned and operated a local service station for over 43 years. Bill was well known and very active in the community, including membership in the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, 13 of those as chief. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served that congregation in several capacities for many years. Bill was an avid Bearcat fan for generations and was especially supportive of Bearcats from his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three brothers, Owen Selby, Raymond Selby, and Cecil Selby.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Billie Brown and husband, Eddie, of Ballinger; a son Tommy Selby of Corpus Christi; a brother, Joe Selby and wife, Clydelle, of Ballinger; three sisters, Madalyn Selby of Ballinger, and Tiny Cain and Sherly Seay of Hutto. Also surviving are grandchildren, Debra Rinn, Bill Brown, Tommy Selby, Jr. and Heather Tiller; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 22 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lange Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23 at Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger with Rev. Joe Chamness officiating.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
