Mary Watkins went to meet her Lord and Savior on January 20, 2009. Mary was born on April 23, 1916 to Wilson and Maude (Bryant) Morgan. She graduated from high school in Oklahoma and shortly thereafter moved to Runnels County with her family. Mary married the love of her life, L. B. Watkins, on November 12, 1938. They spent many happy years farming in the Wilmeth area.
Mary loved the Lord and was active in the Wilmeth Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Winters. She taught Sunday School classes for many years. Mary and L. B. also were able to serve their Lord as home missionaries in Washington and also served at St. Luke’s Baptist Church in Winters.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her sons, Jerry Dean and Richard; her first grandchild, Rebecca Egan; her brothers Virgil, Elmer and Ray; her sisters, Ila Murphy and Helen Crenshaw.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Egan and husband, Jerry, of Ballinger, and Rita Guthrie of San Angelo; a daughter-in-law, Lana Watkins of San Angelo; grandchildren, Lori Mann, Lesli Jones, Patrick Egan, Cheryle Yarbrough, Deanna Watkins, Angela Hodges, Margie Mills and Amber Powers; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mary Watkins will be Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Winters with the Rev. Glenn Shoemake officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 23 at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger and from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on January 24 at the First Baptist Church in Winters. Burial will be at Northview Cemetery in Winters.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Wingate or Winters Volunteer Fire Department, the First Baptist Church of Winters, or a favorite charity.
