Dan Odell Denton, long-time and well-known resident of Ballinger, passed away Monday, October 12, 2015, at Central Texas Nursing and Rehabilitation in Ballinger at the age of 79.
He was born April 3, 1936 near Eola, Texas to John Thomas and Lillie (Morgan) Denton. Hard working and dependable even at a young age, he had part-time jobs as he attended and graduated from Ballinger schools.
Odell’s abilities and personality, along with his dedication, enabled him to be successful in various capacities. He began as a broadcaster for KRUN Radio, and for 20 years his pleasant, bass voice was enjoyed by area residents. His law enforcement career spanned several years in both Runnels and Tom Green Counties. He served with the Runnels County Sheriff Department for a period of time, and then became jailer for Tom Green County until 1999. Odell had also worked part-time for local funeral homes since 1975, most recently for Lange Funeral Home.
Odell served his community and country as well. He joined the Ballinger Volunteer Fire Department in 1962 and held several official positions during his 26 years with the department. He was Hill Country Association President in 1975 and was Ballinger’s 21st Fire Chief for ten years until his retirement in 1988. Odell was a Master Mason and served nine years with the Texas National Guard. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ballinger.
Odell’s tough law enforcement work ethic was coupled with compassion.
A close friend described him as the most tenderhearted man one could ever meet. His kindness, willingness, and helpfulness were always evident and appreciated by his co-workers. Knowledgeable and wise in many areas, he was unmatched in quick, dry wit. He had thousands of jokes or clever comments!
He was preceded in death by parents; brother, Tom Denton; and sister, Leara Smith.
Odell is survived by his devoted daughter, Tamela Denton Park of Austin, and his son, Terry Denton of Ballinger; granddaughters, Debrah Park and Dena Gray; and great-grandchildren, Aryiana, Christopher, Deven, Ashley, and Caden. Also surviving are past and present co-workers, numerous friends, and a grateful Ballinger.
The family expresses sincere thanks to the staff of Central Texas Nursing and Rehab for their excellent care and loving attitude, to Dr. Winton, and to many special friends for their help, prayers, and support.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 13, at Lange Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday, October 14, at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Ballinger with Ferris Akins and Max Pratt officiating. Burial will follow in Old Runnels Cemetery.
