Alvin Donald Haley

April 20, 1927 — March 30, 2016

Alvin Donald Haley, 88, of Ballinger, Texas, lost his battle with Alzheimer’s and complications from pneumonia on March 30, 2016.

He was born April 20, 1927, in Garden City, Texas, on April 20, 1927. Don graduated from Wimberley High School, and later he and family moved to Mason County where they had ranching interests. He was married to Lucille Frenzel in 1947, and they had two children. She preceded him in death in 1994. Donald Duane and Gregory Dale were born to this union.

Don was a member of the First Christian Church in Ballinger where he had served on the Board of Directors. He was a retired rancher and owned and operated a successful trucking business for 27 years in Abilene. His ranching interests were in Menard County and Runnels County.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Allen Jefferson and Maude (Waterhouse) Haley; two brothers, Alton Haley and Tommy Haley; brother-in-law, Pete Jennings; and a step-son, John (Jay) Traylor.

Don loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, shooter, and fisherman. He made many hunting trips to the western United States and Alaska. He also loved hunting in Texas. He loved fishing in the Llano River at Junction. He was a lifetime member of the NRA. He shot at many “shoots” at Abilene and San Angelo to raise money for charity. He had many friends at the Gun Club in Abilene, where he was a member for many years

Surviving Don are his wife, Jill Haley; sons, Don Haley and wife Ida of Brownfield, and Greg Haley of San Antonio; sister, Louise Kensing of Brady; step-daughter, Jinx Schaefer and husband Leroy of Ballinger. Also surviving are grandchildren, Devin, Brooke and Brandi Haley all of San Antonio; one step-grandson, Cody Traylor of Ballinger; and a nephew, Van Haley and wife Joyce of Smithville.

Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Lange Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at First Christian Church on April 1, 2016, at 2:00 pm. Interment at Old Runnels Cemetery on Old Winters Highway in Ballinger will follow shortly after the service.

Pallbearers will be Slim Herman, Martin Popelka, Billy Sellers, Jimmy Bailey, Dwayne Schaefer and Randy Kiser. Honorary pallbearers are B&B Gun Store and the Abilene Gun Club members.

We wish to thank the staff on the Alzheimer’s wing at Central Texas Nursing and Rehabilitation for taking such wonderful care of our loved one in his last remaining years. He was treated with dignity, love and respect. We would like to thank all of the wonderful people who have been there to support us and see us through this time of great pain and loss of our loved one.
