Irene Theresa Mokry, 83, of Ballinger, Texas, died peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Central Texas Nursing and Rehab in Ballinger. She was born on July 7, 1934, to Vaclav and Annie (Dobias) Mokry in Granger, Texas.
Irene will especially be remembered as a loving caregiver to many. She was an attentive daughter who cared for her parents until their deaths. She also held numerous caregiver positions for the elderly in her younger years. While Irene never married or had children of her own, she played a very important role as Aunt Irene, caring for her many nieces and nephews when they were young, whom she also loved to joke and tease up until her death.
From an early age, Irene loved to make things for others. From sewing and needlework, to other craft projects, Irene had a generous heart and enjoyed sharing gifts. Irene truly loved to be around people, get to know them, and share stories of her life. She also liked going to garage sales to identify the perfect find and visit those she met along the way. Irene was also a very good cook -- from kolaches and cookies, to homemade noodles and her holiday specialties.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymond and Wesley Mokry; and her special dog, Brownie. She is survived by sisters, Alice Quicksall of Albuquerque, NM, Mary Ann Pearson of Austin, Helen McGinnis of Abilene, Angeline Lockwood of Fort Worth, and Rose Mueller of Ballinger; and brother, John Mokry of Euless. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that loved her dearly, including her special Ballinger nieces Peggy Freeman, Christine Thomas and Judy Moffett who were loving advocates as her health declined during the last few years.
Irene was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ballinger, as well as the St. Mary Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of Texas.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday January 15, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ballinger with the burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery in Rowena. Memorials can be made in Irene’s name to St. Mary Catholic Church.
