Leoran Clois Hoelscher, 80, of Olfen, Texas passed away Monday afternoon, January 11, 2010 at Ballinger Memorial Hospital.
He was born December 11, 1929 to Agnes Frerich Hoelscher and Clemence J. Hoelscher in the rock house on the family farm near Rowena. Leoran’s father died when he was sixteen years old leaving him and his brothers to continue farming for the family. His mother was a teacher at the time and made the decision to forego teaching and raise her family of seven children. A graduate of Saint Joseph Catholic School in Rowena, Leoran was a farmer and rancher. He loved sheep and would walk a mile to save one if he had to. On June 1, 1950 Leoran and Margaret Rohmfeld were married at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. They moved to a farm north of Olfen, which they eventually purchased from Otto and Minnie Ocker, and lived at this farm for all of their near 60 years of marriage.
In the early 1950’s farming was hard, with droughts and sand storms forcing Leoran, like so many of their friends and neighbors, to take on extra jobs to bring home some income. He had many stories about working for the telephone company, installing telephone lines in southwest Oklahoma when he would be away from home weeks at a time. Another job he did was working in an assembly factory in San Angelo and later building concrete bridges in Runnels County. He was glad when he could return to full time farming again. Leoran knew he had to supplement his farming with raising cattle and sheep, and he was quite successful. He made many friends throughout the years as he had the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. He truly enjoyed talking with everyone. Leoran retired from farming in 2009 but continued to raise cattle and enjoyed his two grandsons when they came to visit. He and Margaret loved to play with their two-year-old great-granddaughter, Molly.
Leoran was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Aldis Hoelscher; sister, Audrey Hoelscher Russell; a granddaughter, Mary; son-in-law, Charles Kahlig; and brother-in-law, Bob Garner.
Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Margaret Rohmfeld Hoelscher of Olfen, and his daughter, Pat Kahlig of Keller. Also surviving are his grandsons, Kevin Kahlig of Keller, and Bryan Kahlig and wife, Maria, and their daughter, Molly, and another baby girl to be born in May. Leoran is survived by three sisters, Bernadine Garner of Del Valle; Mary Dee Hoelscher and husband, Marcus, of Hereford; Cecilia Brosig and husband, E. H. Jr., of Paint Rock; and a brother, Charles Hoelscher and his wife, Ann, of Grape Creek.
Visitation and Rosary will be held at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger on Wednesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. Serving as pallbearers are David Rohmfeld, William Rohmfeld, Jr., Leon Frerich, Clayton Brosig, Narciso Contreras, and Omer Halfmann.
