Alfred John Multer, 84, of Olfen passed away Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.
He was born May 6, 1926 in Olfen to Leo A. and Adela (Gully) Multer. Alfred married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Lou Halfmann, on April 9, 1947 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen where he was a life-time member and served on the Church Council. He was a wonderful husband, “Dad,” “PaPa,” “Great PaPa,” a retired farmer and rancher, and a proud World War II Army veteran.
While serving in the “D” Co. 708th Amphibious Tank Battalion in the South and West Pacific, he was involved in landings on the Philippines and Okinawa. He was discharged Nov. 21, 1946 after 25 months of service, achieving the rank of E5 Tech Sergeant.
Alfred was a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and held offices at the local, district, state, and national levels. He served many years as a director for Farm Bureau, Bethel Co-op Gin, Ballinger Co-op Gin, Catholic Life, Olfen School Board, Runnels County School Board, Ballinger Memorial Hospital, and Federal Land Bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sidona Droll; brother, Curtis Multer; granddaughter, Jessica Chancellor; and sisters-in-law, Gladys Multer and Lydia Halfmann; brothers-in-law, Erwin and Norbert Halfmann, and Arnold Fuchs
Alfred is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Multer of Olfen; children, Jerry Multer (Donna) of Wall, Ellen Seidenberger (Dennis), Brenda Bradford (Larry), Warren Multer (Tanya) all of Garden City, and Norma Jones (Tom) of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Also surviving are grandchildren, Melissa Gunter, Collierville, TN; Tracie Davis, Southlake, TX; John and Eric Seidenberger, Garden City; Ryan Seidenberger, Pearland, TX; Jody Bradford, Dallas; Jamie Wallendorf, San Marcos; Jared Bradford, Lubbock; Cory and Amy Multer, Lubbock; Katy Multer, Garden City; Jennifer Chancellor, New York City; and Tommye Jones, Fayetteville, AR. Great-grandchildren surviving are Trent, Gracen, Drew, Lily, Kylie, Logan, Reed, Owen, Lacy, Isaiah, Emma, Peyton, and Stella. A brother, Roman Multer, an aunt, Sister Irma Multer, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harvey Droll, Agnes Fuchs, Lucille Halfmann, Doris Halfmann, Maurice and Dorine Moeller also survive.
Rosary will be recited Sunday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen. Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated by nephew, Msgr. Larry Droll, Msgr. Bernard Gully, Fr. Ariel Lagunilla, and Deacon Stanley Lange at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 6 also at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will take place in St. Boniface Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, John, Eric, Ryan, Jody, Jared, Cory, and two of his granddaughters, Melissa and Jennifer. Honorary pallbearers will be VFW Post 9196 of Rowena.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity, West Texas Rehab Center, or St. Boniface Cemetery Fund.
