Charles Henry Frey passed peacefully with his family by his side on May 10, 2022. He was born on September 26, 1949, to Gus and Mary Gully Frey in Ballinger and grew up on the family farm in Olfen, Texas. He was the fourth of eight children. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Rowena in 1968 and from Texas A&M University in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart, Judy Matthiesen, on September 16, 1972.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Mary; in-laws, Felix and Helen Matthiesen; brother, Clifford Frey and his wife, Barbara; and niece, Lindsay McCutchen.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, daughters: Jill and son-in-law Owen Davenport of Dallas and their children, Charlie, Jack, and Maddie; Alisha and son-in-law Jaden Winfrey of Brock, Texas and their children, Waylon, Wyatt, and Weston. He is survived by his brothers: Will Frey (Rita) of Fredonia, Rodney (Tamra) of Mason, Doug (Kathy) of Robert Lee, special nephews Jody (Christy) and Marty Frey (Leslie), sisters: Janie Lange (James) of Wall, Carolyn Williams (John) of Waco, and Debbie (John) Lytle of Durango, CO. He also leaves behind many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including Joe Dankworth and Bud Halfmann.
Charles was a cattle rancher his entire life taking care of his animals around the clock. He is a dying breed of cowboy who was hard-working, never complained, stubborn, and persistent until the very end. He loved his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, and made many special outdoor memories of hunting and fishing with them. We are blessed that he was able to spend his last days with all of them. His family would like to give a special thank you to his cardiologist, Dr. Gorman Thorpe, who has performed many medical miracles on his heart over the last 30 years. Upon hearing of his passing, Dr. Thorpe called to say that dad was his friend and both an inspiration and a frustration at times.
