Curtis Roy Traweek

September 22, 1942 — March 10, 2022

Curtis Roy Traweek was called home to be with our Lord on March 10, 2022. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 22, 1942, and grew up in Amarillo, Texas graduating from Amarillo High School in 1960. He attended Tarleton State University for two years and then transferred to West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas where he would graduate and meet the love of his life, Willine Gibbons. Curtis and Willine were married for 47 years until she lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2011.

Curtis started teaching Industrial Arts at Ballinger High school in 1965, a position that he held for 49 years. He loved teaching and working with high school students and still got butterflies the first day of each new school year. Along with his teaching duties, he drove a daily bus route and during football season drove the band to away games. He was more than just a woodworking teacher; he really impacted the lives of his students. He taught them to be problem solvers, to make do with what they had, that when they started something they needed to finish it. He was a mentor and a role model for the standard of what an educator should be. Outside of teaching, Curtis was a private hobbyist pilot and an avid student of aviation. Curtis loved to fly on the weekends and would never turn down a chance to take someone up. He truly loved taking someone flying for the first time.

Curtis is preceded in death by his wife Willine and his parents John and Vena Merle Traweek. He loved his kids and loved spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids every chance he got. He is survived by his children Becky Rodriguez and husband Tony of Georgetown, Texas, Tracy Moore of Georgetown, Texas, and Michael Traweek and his wife April of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends that became family.

To honor Curtis and his legacy, the family has worked with Ballinger ISD to establish the Curtis Traweek Technical School Scholarship. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting this fund by sending your donations to:

The family would like to thank the outpouring of kind words, prayers, and well-wishes from family, friends, and his former students. He was a great husband, father, teacher, and above all a great person who will never be forgotten.
