Dorothy Marie Stringer Roberts, 79, passed away Sunday evening at her home in Miles following complications from a stroke in February.
Dorothy was born April 23, 1941, on the Henry and Georgia Lee Stringer farm two miles east of Miles. She attended Miles school and graduated from MHS in 1959.She then graduated from San Angelo Business College and began working as a secretary for Hemphill-Wells department store in San Angelo. In the spring of 1963 at the Rendezvous Drive-In, she met a young airman named Richard “Whitey” Roberts from Union Springs, New York. They were married on Oct. 17, 1964, at Johnson Street Church of Christ in San Angelo. Following a honeymoon trip to visit relatives in Miami, Florida, Dorothy and Whitey made their way to Rochester, New York, for a time, where Whitey worked for a furniture store and Dorothy worked for Bausch & Lomb. Soon, they returned to San Angelo, where Dorothy again worked for Hemphill-Wells. Their daughter, Pamela “Pam” DeAnn, was born in 1966, and their son, Randall “Randy” Russell, was born in 1970. They later moved to Miles, where Dorothy was very active in her children’s education and extracurricular activities. Dorothy also worked for Union Texas Petroleum in San Angelo, Citizens State Bank in Miles, and Trans Texas Federal Credit Union in San Angelo. She and Whitey also owned the BYOB Water Store in San Angelo before their retirement. Dorothy’s hobbies included doll collecting, family genealogy, and crocheting. Many of her favorite moments were spent with her only grandchild, Katherine. “Nana” supported Katherine in her dog showing, FFA, choir, and other school activities. Dorothy was also proud to welcome her new grandson-in-law, Lawson Price, to the family in August.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 56 years, Whitey; her daughter, Pam, and husband, Mike Howell, of San Antonio; her son, Randy, and wife, Lynda, of Amarillo; her granddaughter, Katherine, and husband, Lawson Price, of San Marcos; and her brother, Ronnie Stringer, and wife, Sue, of Miles. She will also be lovingly remembered by her brother-in-law, Larry Ray, of Miles; niece, Christi Hess, and husband, Tanner, of McLean, Texas; nephew, Jeff Ray, of Miles; niece, Richanda Brunet, and husband, Brandon, of Lubbock; great-niece, Amanda Hess, and great-nephew, Jacob Hess, both of McLean, and great-niece, Elora Brunet, of Lubbock.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Miles Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger.
The family would like to thank the staff at Central Texas Rehabilitation Center in Ballinger and to all of the nurses and nurse aides with Ballinger Home Health and Hospice who so lovingly cared for Dorothy in her final days.
