James “J.W.” Witherspoon Benson, 77, of Winters, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on January 3, 1947, to James and Lola Faye (Fischer) Benson in Winters, Texas. In 1980 he married the love of his life, Sandra Cole in a ceremony in Lordsburg, New Mexico. J.W. was a cowboy through and through, a rancher, and a Jack of all trades. Gifted with hands that could create beautiful works of art, he enjoyed leatherworking, and hand braided many intricate pieces. He was an outdoorsman at heart and enjoyed leading guided hunts in the white mountains of Arizona, fly fishing and working with horses.
J.W. is preceded in death by his parents James and Lola Benson.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandra, his son Colt Benson and wife Amber, and daughter Melissa Brown and husband Scott. J.W. is also dearly remembered by his 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bluff Creek Cowboy Church in J.W.’s honor.
A memorial service will be held for J.W. at the chapel at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger, Texas at 10:00 am on Friday, January 3, 2025. Marcy Grunn will officiate.
