He was born May 20, 1939 to Leonard and Letha Smith in Ballinger. After graduating high school, he attended Abilene Christian University where he received a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. He then went on to receive a Master’s Degree from Trinity University in History and a Ph. D from the University of Oklahoma in History and Philosophy of Education. Glenn taught at the secondary level and then began his career as a college professor. He taught at Oklahoma Christian College, University of Oklahoma, and Iowa State University. He was the department chair and Associate Dean at University of Houston-Clear Lake and he retired as the department chair and professor at the University of Northern Illinois University. While in college, Glenn was a member of the ROTC and was honorably discharged from the National Guard and the United States Marine Corps. In 1976, he won first prize in the KAPPAN Bicentennial Essay Contest.
Glenn is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Evelyn Lee and husband, Ellis, and Merle Gehegan.
He is survived by his son, Professor Jeffery Robert Smith and special caretaker, Lisa Villalpanda of Ballinger.
Services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 29 at Lange Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Riley officiating. A private burial will follow at Old Runnels Cemetery.
