Lucille Frances Schwertner

December 2, 1925 — January 24, 2023

Our strong-willed, beautiful mother passed peacefully into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.  Lucille Frances (Willberg) Schwertner was born December 2, 1925, in Miles, Texas to Arthur and Matilda (Mueller) Willberg.   She was raised on a farm near Miles and graduated in 1942 from Miles High School.   She met the love of her life, Leo Paul Schwertner and married January 3, 1945.   They shared 28 wonderful years together.  She worked alongside L.P. in the field teaching their children hard work ethics.  Upon Leo’s death in 1973, she continued to grow the farm and raise her children, guiding them to their successes today.

Lucille loved to fish, especially the annual summer trips to Port Aransas where she especially enjoyed catching gaff top in the channel and deep-sea fishing for king fish.  She was an avid gardener and had the greenest thumb growing anything from a sprig broken off a plant to a towering acorn tree from a seed, always bringing something home from a trip in her luggage to see if she could get it to grow.  She did retouch work at Wallace Studios, volunteered at Shannon Hospital, worked as a florist, and traveled extensively in Europe and the United States making many lifelong friends along the way.  Her last trip was to Alabama to visit the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Angels Monastery as well as attend mass at EWTN.   She enjoyed watching daily mass on TV.

She seldom missed a domino party or polka dance.  She had multiple accordions, never having any music lessons, she would play by ear.  She enjoyed playing dominoes at the Senior Citizens in Miles, Rowena, and Wall.  In her later years when she could no longer make the dances, she enjoyed watching Big Joe and Molly B seeing who she might recognize on the dance floor.

She and L.P. were among the founders of St. Thomas Catholic church in Miles where she was a lifelong member and taught Catechism (Religious Ed).  She was a member of the St. Theresa Altar Society and Runnels County Extension Homemakers.   She was strong in her faith and instilled that in her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband; sister Ruby (Willberg) Book, son-in-law Marvin Asbill, and great-grandson Cole Harrell.

Lucille is survived by her loving children, Carol Asbill of San Angelo, Harvey (Linda) Schwertner of Miles, Ronald (Patty) Schwertner of Denton, Theresa (Donald) Weishuhn of Eola, Steven (Linda) Schwertner of Miles; grandchildren, Jean(Tracy) Moody, Scott(Jennifer) Asbill, Melissa (Randal) Jacoby, Paul (Kim) Schwertner, Kelly (Todd) Harrell, Jodie (Todd) Helms, Lea (Tuan) Do, Grant Schwertner, Lori (Patrick) Gildart, Ryan (Rachael) Schwertner, Erin Schwertner, Adam Schwertner, Carrie (Max) Batla, Cody (Misty) Weishuhn, Cassie Weishuhn, Amy (Marcus) Halfmann, Sara (Josh) Flohr, Eric (Alisha) Schwertner;  45 of great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
