Nelda Poe

Nelda Fern Poe, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Central Texas Nursing and Rehab in Ballinger, Texas on December 28, 2023.

She was born March 2, 1939, in Winters, Texas to George Lee Smith and Ella Vera Bullard. Nelda was a nurse for many years at Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene, Texas, and then upon retirement went on to work at Dillard’s in Abilene. She adored her children, Pam and Fred, and husband “Butch” and was always trying to “ride herd” with what they were doing day in and day out. Nelda loved being outdoors and taking care of her calves. She would patrol her neighborhood just to keep watch for them.  Nelda and Butch created many fond memories for their children by taking them on trips to Ruidoso, New Mexico during the summers and spending time with them at the horse races.

Nelda is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dean Poe “Butch” and her son Carey Dean Poe.

She is survived by her brother George Smith and wife Brenda of Merkel, Texas; daughter Pamela Vance and husband Mark of San Angelo, Texas; son Fred Poe and wife Amber of Winters, Texas. Nelda will be greatly missed by her five grandchildren Quentin Bell and wife Ashlynn of Phoenix, Arizona, Brennan Bell of San Angelo, Texas, Paige Bell of San Angelo, Texas, Madison Poe of Winters, Texas and Wade Poe of Winters, Texas

A private family service will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Ballinger Home Health and Hospice and Central Texas Nursing and Rehab for taking such good care of Nelda.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, in Nelda’s honor.
