Roy Smith

Roy Smith, of Miles, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at the age of 91.

He was born on June 13, 1932, the youngest of 6 children, in Woodson, Texas, to Walter and Oma (Kerby) Smith. Roy proudly served in the Korean War fighting on the front lines from 1950 until 1953. Upon his return from the war, he started his career with the trucking industry in Odessa, Texas. He married the love of his life, Jody Henderson, on December 21, 1956. His work led him to San Angelo, Texas in 1970, and the family settled in Miles. After he retired from the trucking industry he worked and lived on Lake Ivie as a ranch foreman for Herbert Graham. In 2006, he and Jody moved back to Miles. Roy loved to play softball, fish, hunt, garden, and he was a great storyteller of days gone by.

Roy leaves behind his loving wife, Jody of 66 years; daughters, Debbie (Adolf) Elguezabal and Kay (Glenn) Gesch; son Ronald Smith; five grandchildren, Christina (Redgy) Cook, Shanna Smetana, Melissa (Cody) Clements, Brandon Smetana (fiancé Liz Carrasco) and Myles Gesch; five great-grandchildren, Reagan Cook, Kristyn Lloyd (Patrick), Gage Cook, Sadie Clements and Maverick Smetana; two great-great grandchildren Gavin and Zane Cook, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Oma Smith;’ one brother, Bud Smith; four sisters, Irene Crowder, Mary Pryor, Lona Rutledge, Lois Chalk; great-grandson Garrett Cook; and best friends Don Hewitt and Don’s daughter Teresa Newman.

The family would like to thank those who touched Roy’s life throughout his 91 years here on earth. Special thanks to dear friends Carolyn Hewitt, Mark (Kerri) Hewitt, Pam Bayles, and Jim Newman. Thanks to Hospice of San Angelo for their loving care during his final days. He was a wonderful husband, father, papaw, and friend to many and will be greatly missed.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 1:00 pm, at the Miles Cemetery, with Mark Hewitt officiating.
