Wilma Jean Pitts was reunited with her Lord and Savior on August 19th, 2021 at the age of 89, in Dallas, Texas. She passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Wilma was born on May 23rd, 1932 in Hico, Texas. She was the only child of William Emory and Cora Irene Bush. Wilma completed high school in Ballinger, Texas.
On January 3rd, 1959, Wilma married William Alfred “Hanks” Pitts. Wilma joined Hanks living overseas in Venezuela. In 1965, the family moved back to Texas with their three children and settled in Corpus Christi. Wilma was an active volunteer in local schools, a scout leader, and an election judge. She was a devoted wife and a joyful and caring mom. Her most rewarding and impactful legacy was being a mother.
After retiring in 1985, Wilma and Hanks moved to Celeste, Texas, and began ranch life. She was a dedicated member of the White Rock Community Methodist Church, a member of the Eastern Star, and worked as a tax preparer. She was involved in several women’s organizations in Celeste, an active member in the White Rock Community Center, and volunteered throughout the area. Wilma was an outstanding cook, enjoyed baking, and was a gracious hostess. She loved travel, raising cattle, gardening, and reading. She also took great pleasure in spending time with her granddaughters.
Wilma is preceded in death by her parents, William Emory and Cora Irene Bush, and her husband, William Alfred “Hanks” Pitts, and step-grandson, Marshall Spencer Thurman. She is survived by her daughter, Sherri Thurman and husband Glenn Thurman of Dallas; sons, Kyle Pitts of Dallas and John Pitts of Kingsland, Texas; three granddaughters, Lauren Pitts of Austin, Jessica Pitts and Payton Thurman of Dallas; step-granddaughter, Leslie Miller and her husband Jarod and their three children, Preston, Ryan and Dawson, step great-grandson, Brooklyn Thurman; sister-in-law, Lynn Pitts; and brother-in-law, Tom Dawson. She is also survived by extended family and friends, Jennifer Pitts, Joey Shashay, Nancy Long.
She will be missed not only by her family but by the many people whose lives she touched. The family is grateful for her happy disposition and attitude, even as her physical health declined. We would like to express our gratitude for her wonderful caregivers through the last years, whom she loved like family.
A private graveside service will be held on Friday, August 27th at the Garden of Memories in Ballinger, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in Wilma’s name. (www.bcrf.org)
